Please note that smoking is NOT allowed at the conference site, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, except in the restaurant. There is a covered outside area on the left side of the entrance of the Museum which is also suitable for smoking, assuming that it will not be too cold. We very much appreciate your cooperation.

Flea-market:

On Saturday morning till around 3 pm there is a large flea-market on the south bank of the Main river. During this time no cars and buses are allowed on the Schaumainkai. Car drivers thus need to drive down the Schweizer-Strasse from the south in order to reach the parking lot of the Museum für Angewandte Kunst on the Metzlerstrasse (see below). New! Note that, although the entrance to the Metzlerstrasse is blocked, visitors of the Museum will be let through by a guard. Participants coming by public transport from the Hauptbahnhof (central station) should take tram (Strassenbahn) no. 16 rather than bus no. 46 (see also below).

Public transport:

Tickets for local trains, subway and trams can be purchased from machines at the stations or on the platforms. Nowadays these machines mostly accept banknotes of 10, 20 or 50 Marks as well (if you happen to come across a machine that only accepts coins, you may try another machine at the same station or on the opposite platform). Tickets for buses can be purchased on the bus. To get off a bus, press one of the buttons between the windows. Buses may not not halt at stops where nobody has indicated that he/she needs to get off and nobody is waiting at the stop. You may change between any means of transport (except long distance trains) without having to buy a new ticket.The price for a ride inside Frankfurt is DM 3,10 (DM 2,10 for at most two stations on the subway or three stops on bus or tram, the so-called "Kurzstrecke"), the price for a ride from the airport to the city is DM 6,10 (it may be useful to have many 10 Pfennig coins at hand...).

Trains from the airport:

Frankfurt airport now has two train stations, one for local trains and one for long-distance trains, which are quite some distance apart. To go to the city, make sure to follow the signs to the station for local trains, which is called Regionalbahnhof / Regional Train Station. If you come to Frankfurt by train, do not change to a local train at the airport, but rather at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof.

To the Museum für Angewandte Kunst by car

Behind the Museum there is a small parking lot for visitors with entrance on the Metzlerstrasse. Please note that, due to the weekly flea-market, the Schaumainkai is not open to traffic on Saturday till around 3 pm. We therefore recommend to take exit 51 (Anschlussstelle Frankfurt/M.-Süd) from the A3 and to follow the signs Frankfurt am Main - Sachsenhausen along the Mörfelder Landstrasse and then the Kennedy-Allee. Where the Kennedy-Allee crosses the Gartenstrasse at an acute angle, New! continue straight ahead on the Hans-Thoma-Strasse. At the next traffic light, at the intersection with the Schweizer Strasse, continue onto the Metzlerstrasse which is more or less right in front of you. Note that, although the entrance to the Metzlerstrasse is blocked, visitors of the Museum will be let through by a guard. From the Hauptbahnhof (central station) to the Museum für Angewandte Kunst

• Taxi: around DM 20,-
• Public transport (without changing and just a short walk): Take tram (Strassenbahn) no. 16 in the direction Offenbach (Stadtgrenze). Get off at the fourth stop called Schweizer-/Gartenstrasse, just before the tram turns right onto the Schweizer Strasse. Walk down the Schweizer Strasse in the opposite direction of that in which the tram continues (after having turned right just after the stop) until you reach the river. Turn right onto the Schaumainkai and you will find the Museum on your right side after ca. 300 meters. Total walking time: 7 or 8 minutes. The trams run every 10 minutes on Saturday afternoon and once every 20 minutes on Sunday morning.

From the Airport to the Museum für Angewandte Kunst

• Taxi: around DM 50,-
• Public transport plus taxi: Take a local train S8 in the direction Hanau Hauptbahnhof or S9 in the direction Offenbach Ost. Get off at the Hauptbahnhof and take a taxi to the museum (around DM 20). The train ride takes 10 or 15 minutes, and on Saturday the trains run every 15 minutes, departing from the airport at 3, 18, 33 and 48 minutes past every hour.
• Public transport (with one change and a less than 10 minutes walk): Take a local train S8 in the direction Hanau Hauptbahnhof or S9 in the direction Offenbach Ost. Get off at the stop Hauptwache (next to Taunusanlage) and change to the subway U1, U2 or U3 in the direction Südbahnhof. Get off at the second stop, Schweizer Platz and walk back on the Schweizer Strasse in the direction of the Main river. Turn right onto the Schaumainkai and the Museum will be on your right after around 300 meters. The train ride takes around 15 minutes, and on Saturday around noon the trains leave from the airport at 3, 18, 33, 48 minutes past every hour. Alternatively, since the S8 and S9 from the airport pass through the Hauptbahnhof (central station), you have the option listed above under "From the Hauptbahnhof to the Museum", which may take slightly longer but has a slightly shorter walk.

From Hotel Royal to the Museum für Angewandte Kunst

Leaving the Hotel turn left onto the Wallstrasse. Cross a large street, the Walter-Kalb-Strasse, and continue on the Schulstrasse. When you reach the Schaumainkai on the south bank of the Main river, turn left onto that street. The Museum is located around 250 meters further on your left.
 

From Hotel Maingau to the Museum für Angewandte Kunst

Leaving the Hotel turn right onto the Schifferstrasse. Cross a large street, the Walter-Kalb-Strasse, and continue on the Schifferstrasse. When you reach the Schaumainkai on the south bank of the Main river, turn left onto that street. The Museum is located around 100 meters further on your left.
 

From the Museum für Angewandte Kunst to Hotel Royal

Leaving the Museum through the main entrance/exit, return to the street on the Main river bank, the Schaumainkai and turn right. After around 250 meters turn right into the Schulstrasse. Cross a large street, the Walter-Kalb-Strasse, and continue on the Wallstrasse. The Hotel is some 200 meter further on the right side of the street, just after the intersection with the Brückenstrasse.
 

From the Museum für Angewandte Kunst to Hotel Maingau

Leaving the Museum through the main entrance/exit, return to the street on the Main river bank, the Schaumainkai and turn right. After around 100 meters turn right into the Schifferstrasse. Cross a large street, the Walter-Kalb-Strasse, and continue on the Schifferstrasse. The Hotel is some 200 meter further on the left side of the street, just before the intersection with the Brückenstrasse.
 

New! To Hotel Royal or Hotel Maingau by car

Due to the numerous one-way streets in Sachsenhausen, you will have to reach the hotels by coming down the Elisabethenstrasse (which runs north-east of the two hotels) and then turning onto the Brückenstrasse. For Hotel Royal, take the first left (Wallstrasse) and the hotel will be on your right side after ca. 50 meters; there is parking space for hotel guests in the yard. For Hotel Maingau, take the second right (Schifferstrasse) and the hotel will be on your right side after less than 50 meters. I am not currently certain whether the hotel has its own parking lot. There is a parking garage on the Walter-Kolb-Strasse (continue on the Schiffer-Strasse till the next traffic left and turn right; the garage is on the left side of the street after ca. 200 meters, but you may have to continue a little further to make a U-turn). Typical fees are DM 35,- for 24 hours.
To reach the Elisabethenstrasse from the centre of the city, drive down the Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse in southern direction, cross the river on the Alte Brücke ("Old bridge") and follow the curve in the road for around 200 meters more, then turn left onto the Elisabethenstrasse.
To reach the Elisabethenstrasse from outside of the city, we recommend to exit the A3 at the Offenbacher Kreuz and to follow the B3 / Babenhäuser Landstrasse in the direction Frankfurt / Sachsenhausen. Where this street ends, turn right onto the Darmstädter Landstrasse and continue into the city. 100 or 200 meters after having passed under the railroad, continue straight ahead on the Paradiesgasse (the main traffic continues somewhat to the right on the Dreieichstrasse). The Paradiesgasse changes into the Elisabethenstrasse where the road bends to the left. The Brückenstrasse then is the first street on the left.
 

From the Hauptbahnhof (central station) to Hotel Royal or Hotel Maingau

• Taxi: around DM 30,-.
• Public transport plus taxi: Take a local train S3 in the direction Darmstadt, S4 in the direction Langen, S2, S5 or S6 in the direction Südbahnhof, S8 in the direction Hanau Hauptbahnhof or S9 in the direction Offenbach Ost (i.e. any inbound train). Get off at the stop Konstablerwache (next to Hauptwache) after less than 10 minutes travel. Take a southbound taxi (i.e. to the right with respect from the direction in which the train arrives) for less than DM 15,-.
• Public transport, minimizing walking distance: Take any of the same local trains as in the previous variant. Get off at the stop Konstablerwache (next to Hauptwache) after less than 10  minutes travel and take bus no. 36 in the direction Hainer Weg. Get off at the third stop called Elisabethenstrasse (after crossing the river and then making a sharp turn to the left). Walk back on the same street for less than 50 meters and turn left onto the Brückenstrasse. For Hotel Royal: take the first left and you will see the hotel very soon on the right side of the street. For Hotel Maingau: cross the Wallstrasse and take the next right (Schifferstrasse, just before a small park). The hotel is on the right side of the street after less than 50 meters.
• Public transport, without changing, with a 10-minute walk: Take a local train S3 in the direction Darmstadt, S4 in the direction Langen, or S2, S5 or S6 in the direction Südbahnhof. Get off the train at Südbahnhof (South Station), next to Lokalbahnhof. Leave the station through the northern exit (i.e. going to the right with respect to the direction in which the train arrives; note that between Hauptwache and Südbahnhof the train traverses more than half of a circle) and take the Brückenstrasse, which leaves off aslant  to the right (in between Hedderigstrasse and Stegstrasse). Follow the Brückenstrasse passing a small rotary / roundabout and a small park. For Hotel Maingau: immediately after the park turn left onto the Schifferstrasse; the hotel is on the right side of the street after less than 50 meters. For Hotel Royal: continue straight ahead on what is still the Brückenstrasse and take the first right (Wallstrasse); the hotel is on the right side of the street after around 50 meters.

From the Airport to Hotel Royal or Hotel Maingau

• Taxi: around DM 50,-.
• Public transport plus taxi: Take a local train S8 in the direction Hanau Hauptbahnhof or S9 in the direction Offenbach Ost. Get off at the stop Konstablerwache (next to Hauptwache) after 16 minutes travel. Take a southbound taxi (i.e. to the right with respect from the direction in which the train arrived) for less than DM 15,-.
• Public transport, minimizing walking distance: Take a local train S8 in the direction Hanau Hauptbahnhof or S9 in the direction Offenbach Ost. Get off at the stop Konstablerwache (next to Hauptwache) after 16 minutes travel and take bus no. 36 in the direction Hainer Weg. Get off at the third stop called Elisabethenstrasse (after crossing the river and then making a sharp turn to the left). Walk back on the same street for less than 50 meters and turn left onto the Brückenstrasse. For Hotel Royal: take the first left and you will see the hotel very soon on the right side of the street. • Public transport, minimizing non-trivial changes of trains/buses: Take a local train S8 in the direction Hanau Hauptbahnhof or S9 in the direction Offenbach Ost. Change at any of the stops Hauptbahnhof, Taunusanlage, Hauptwache or Konstablerwache to any of the local trains S3 in the direction Darmstadt, S4 in the direction Langen, S2, S5 or S6 in the direction Südbahnhof (changing at Taunusanlage may be particularly attractive during rush hour since it is a very quiet station). Get off the train at Südbahnhof (South Station), next to Lokalbahnhof. Leave the station through the northern exit (i.e. going to the right with respect to the direction in which the train arrives; note that between Hauptwache and Südbahnhof the train traverses more than half of a circle) and take the Brückenstrasse, which leaves off aslant to the right (in between Hedderigstrasse and Stegstrasse). Follow the Brückenstrasse passing a small roundabout / rotary and a small park. Directions to the Institute for History of Science
(Institut für Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften)

Address: Building FLAT 1, Robert-Mayer-Strasse 1 (at the southwest corner of the Robert-Mayer-Strasse and the Senckenberganlage). Secretariat: room 204 (second floor). Library: room 102 (first floor; entering through the main entrance, walk through the corridor till the other side of the building, go up one flight of stairs and knock at the glass door).

Our Institute (indicated on the general map given at the top of this page) is close to the subway station Bockenheimer Warte (U4 or U6 / U7) and to the tram stop Festhalle/Messe (tram no. 16). If you want to visit the institute on Friday, November 16, we recommend to first make an appointment by calling the secretary Mr. Wagner (069-798 22337) or the librarian Mr. Dyga (069-798 22338). On Monday, November 19 there will be someone at the institute all day.

The weather in Frankfurt in November is rather unpredictable. Temperatures may drop till around 0 °C (30 °F) at night and will normally be around 10 °C (50 °F) during the day. Some rain is likely, some snow not impossible.

Currency
Although the good old German Mark (DM) will be in use till January 1, 2002 and Euros will only be actually available starting from that date, many prices in shops and restaurants are now indicated in Euros. Since 2 DM correspond roughly to 1 Euro, please make sure which price you are looking at if you think you have found a bargain.
