An International Conference on Scientific Transmission between East and West

Between Orient and Occident: Transformation of Knowledge

November 6 and 7, 2009
Deutsches Museum, Munich, Germany

The transmission of knowledge from one cultural area or period to another is an extremely important topic in the history of science. Many scientific developments in the past can only be understood on the basis of a solid knowledge of the paths along which scholarly works were transmitted from, for example, Greek antiquity and India to Islam, and from Islam to medieval and Renaissance Europe. During this conference 16 speakers will look at the process of transmission in more detail, covering a period of more than 2000 years and a large variety of cultural areas. They will discuss, in particular, the question of how knowledge was transformed in the process of its transmission as a result of the differences between the originating and appropriating cultures. These differences may be of various types: language, scientific models and methodology, forms of representation and applications, institution and social role of the actors, etc. Scientific fields treated will include mathematics, astronomy and astrology, geography, pharmacology and natural philosophy.

Detailed information on the theme of the conference, the speakers, the programme, and practicalities can be found under the links below.
